Four years after the earthquake of January 12, 2010, the recovery of Haiti still faces major obstacles. According to the UN, 817,000 Haitians are still in need of humanitarian assistance due to food insecurity or malnutrition, poor living conditions and increased evictions of 306 camps that still exist. In addition, cholera remains a health crisis of national dimension since Haiti concentrated half of alleged cases of cholera in the world.

However, thanks to the determination of the Haitian people and their government, the generosity of people and governments around the world, Oxfam highlights that significant progress has been made. 89% of IDPs have left the camps, the incidence of cholera has been halved and the capacity of the Haitian authorities to coordinate humanitarian aid in emergency situations has also increased.

Haitians are trying to forge a new future by rebuilding effective government structures that involve civil society, public institutions and the private sector in the reconstruction plans and programs of risk management.

Currently, the work of Oxfam in Haiti focuses on the long-term development with the promotion of sustainable change. Projects provide safe and adequate shelter and integration opportunities to displaced Haitians ; the identification and works in partnership with Haitian organizations in initiatives to strengthen citizen participation ; encouraging job creation through the development of small businesses ; the creation of stronger and healthier communities with assistance in the construction of long-term remediation services ; the work with small farmers to support their livelihoods and other initiatives to rebuild a new Haiti by engaging citizens and government.

Oxfam calls for public engagement and international assistance to meet humanitarian challenges and current developments in Haiti.
