Haiti - Education : Meeting Lamothe - Michaëlle Jean to improve the PSUGO

Yesterday, Tuesday Laurent Lamothe, the Prime Minister had a working meeting at the primature, with Michaëlle Jean, the UNESCO Special Envoy for Haiti, about ongoing programs and other mechanisms designed to modernize the Haitian education system.

Regarding the Program of free universal education and Compulsory (PSUGO), discussions focused on the importance of the program as spearheading of the ight against extreme poverty and the need to ensure equality of opportunity for all children. They discussed the implementation of the second phase of the program consisting to insert quality requirements.

The quality of education that will be provided to the beneficiary children, security conditions in institutions located primarily in the zone of vulnerability, the upgrading of teachers are all issues discussed during the meeting.

The Prime Minister announced in the aftermath, an online campaign of recycling and training of teachers of the first cycles and Ms. Jean mentioned the organization in Haiti, in April of an assize on education.

Recall that last October, the Head of Government had organized a review meeting in order to take the necessary measures to improve the program. This meeting resulted in the creation of a monitoring committee to restructure the PSUGO and arrangements were made for the creation of an application available online to locate the beneficiary schools and verify the effectiveness of the program whileensuring that these entities work according to the criteria of MENFP.

On her side, Michäelle Jean noted with satisfaction the recent significant advances in the country in key areas such as economics, agriculture, rule of law and the new perception, which stood on the country's image abroad, however she noted that it is important that a more structured approach is undertaken, firstly on the side of the Government, and secondly for all citizens to demonstrate to the world that Haiti has changed course since the accession to power of President Martelly.
