Haiti - Religion : The Cathedral Saint Jacques and Saint-Philippes of Jacmel, soon restored

According to Mgr. Launay Saturné, bishop of Jacmel, appointed April 28, 2010 by Pope Benedict XVI, the restoration works of the Cathedral St-Philippe and St-Jacques (built in 1859) situated on the Market Square in the neighborhood of Bel-Air in Jacmel, will beginning in September 2014. Note that since February 2011, Mgr. Saturné, had expressed his desire to rebuild the cathedral of the city, a "Symbolic place and of unity", heavily damaged by the earthquake of January 2010 https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-2416-haiti-jacmel-rebuild-the-cathedral-but-not-without-mission.html

According to initial estimates, the restoration, which will last two years, is expected to cost between 7 and 8 million U.S. dollars and the Cathedral will keep the same architecture, said Mgr. Saturné at a press conference.

For the technical part, the work will be done under the direction of the engineering and construction firm Miyamoto Haiti (subsidiary of Miyamoto International). The architectural part will be the responsibility of "Proximité Catholique avec Haïti et son Églis" (PROCHE) (Catholic Proximity to Haiti and his Church).

Mgr Saturné ndicated that the proximity of public market could present a major challenge for the realization of this important project.

In addition, a Commission was established with the mission to raise funds through social and cultural activities to contribute to financing and the success of the restoration of the Cathedral on the theme "Ansanm nap mete Katedrale nou an kanpe".

Recall that the Cathedral of Jacmel built in 1859, was severely damaged by a fire in September 1896 and rebuilt on the same site shortly after.
