Haiti - Diaspora : $2M grant to relocate the Maison d'Haïti of Montreal

Sunday, Denis Coderre, the Mayor of Montreal, announced a grant of 2 million Canadian dollars (thanks to government assistance under the Montreal agreement in 2025, administered by the Secretariat to the region metropolitan) to support the relocation of the Maison d'Haiti of Montreal.

"Today, after having given so much to the Montreal community, now it's the Maison d'Haïti who needs help. More specifically, the Maison needs... a new home ! This relocation is a unique opportunity to maintain its services in the heart of Saint-Michel, and allow him to improve the quality of life of its users in a context of increased attendance. On the eve of my departure for Haiti as part of the participation of Montreal to the Municipal Cooperation Program Haiti / Canada, This project emphasizes once more the importance of the Haitian community in the city," delcared ayor Coderre, in the presence of Jean-François Lisée Minister responsible for the Montreal region, Diane de Courcy, Minister of mmigration and Cultural Communities and Minister of the Charter of the French language, MP David Heurtel (Viau), Wladimir Jeanty, President of the Maison d'Haiti of Montreal and Marjorie Villefranche Director General of the Maison d'Haïti.

The current premises leased by the Maison d'Haiti, being no longer able to meet the growing needs, the organization plans to relocate its operations to a new building to be built in the rear of that currently occupied, at the ntersection of 12th Avenue and Emile-Journault. In addition, becoming owner, the Maison d'Haïti will perpetuate and strengthen its financial position.

The project cost is estimated at $3.2 million and includes the acquisition of land belonging to the Commission Scolaire de Montreal and the construction of a 9,500 ft2 building on two floors, with delivery scheduled for May 2015. The "Société de Développement Angus" will accompany the Maison d'Haiti for the support, the development and implementation of the project.

La Maison d'Haiti is a non-profit dedicated for over 40 years to the integration of immigrants families and the creation and development of close links with the host society. The Maison d'Haiti employ 22 people, many interns and mobilizes annually nearly 200 volunteers, offers continuing education programs, of literacy, economic, social and cultural integration integration, integration of young people, school and parental support. Last year, more than 4,450 people, men, women, adolescents, children and infants have benefited directly from the Maison d'Haïti.
