On Tuesday, Prime Minister, Laurent Lamothe, at the head of a Haitian delegation attended at the seat of parliament in Valparaiso, at the inauguration ceremony of the new President of Chile, Michelle Bachelet, which succeeds to Sebastián Piñera electd in 2010.

During this visit, which comes within the framework of strengthening cooperation ties between the two countries, Prime Minister Lamothe will meet with outgoing President Sebastián Piñera before being officially received by President Michelle Bachelet.

The Head of Government will take advantage to meet representatives of several delegations from friendly countries such as Mexico, to further discuss mechanisms to be put in place to improve the living conditions of the Haitian people. Prime Minister Lamothe, should also have several high-level meetings with the Chilean authorities, including Rodrigo Peñailillo, the Minister of the Interior and the General Samuel Cabezas Fonseca.

On the sidelines of this solemn event, the leader of the Haitian government has told the press, congratulated for her victory and the Chilean people who have shown great political maturity. He also stressed the admiration of Ms. Bachelet for Haiti and expressed hope that the frank and sincere cooperation between the two countries grows during the new mandate of Ms. Bachelet. He recalled the many agreements between the two countries, particularly in the education sector where the Chilean government has awarded scholarships to Haitian students and contributed to the continuous training of the National Police of Haiti stressing that "other agreements, take into account the development of the mining sector that will reduce the country's dependence vis-à-vis the international community. In addition to the Chilean, a a South African specialist laboratory is currently conducting an evaluation of mineral resources in Haiti."

During the day Wednesday, in order to facilitate the integration of Haitian nationals in Chilean society, Laurent Lamothe will meet with key leaders of the Haitian community to develop appropriate strategies to promote integration.
