Haiti - Environment : Launch of Phase II of the National Reforestation Campaign

Tuesday in Grand-Bois (West Department), the President Michel Martelly, accompanied amon others by Jean Francois Thomas, Minister of the Environment, of Departmental Delegate West Gonzague Day, of the Deputy Lamarre Baptiste (Cornillon / Grand Bois) and Yonel Ducasse, Mayor of the town, has officially launched the second phase of the National reforestation campaign 2013-2016.

Thanks to the commitment of students from several schools in Cornillon / Grand-Bois, over 20,000 seedlings were planted. The ambitious goal of this national campaign, initiated by President Martelly, is to ground more than 116 million trees (fruit and forest species) to have a vegetation cover of 4% (which was less than 2% in 2006).

"The environment is the only true common heritage of Haitians. It is our heritage and indispensable source of life. It is therefore in the interest of a joint effort of its protection that I considered the 'E' of Environment as a priority of my government program of 5E," declared he Head of State who said he believes that the involvement of young people in this "activity demonstrates the undeniable sense of Haitians to the environment of their country."

For his part, the Minister Thomas, said that the launch of the second phase of the national campaign, in Cornillon / Grand Bois, will significantly reduce environmental degradation and facilitate better management of natural resources.

The students in turn, promised to work to the full success of this campaign, visibly pleased with the interest of the Haitian government to protect the environment.

President Martelly believes that the implementation of such a program, will greatly contribute to enhance the beauty of the national landscape, and to initiate an awareness of the population on the importance of increasing the vegetation cover and curb erosion of soil.
