Haiti - Heritage : Rescue of the cultural goods of the Center of art

The Center of Rescue of Cultural Goods (Centre de Sauvetage de Biens Culturels CSBC), directed by Jean-Julien Olsen [former Minister of Culture under the government of Pierre-Louis/Préval], a specialist in conservation and preservation work in the "Project of rescue of the Haitian cultural heritage", which was set up during the month of June by the Haitian Ministry of Culture and Communication and the "Smithsonian Institute".

This project consists in recovering the cultural heritage, damaged or threatened of disappearance (historical artefacts, files and collections and architectural elements) hidden under the debris of the Center of art destroyed at the time of the seism of last January. Damaged works, will be restored then preserved before being returned to their owners.

The CSBC launched, Monday, September 6, rescue operations in partnership with the Japanese team of engineers of the Minustah under the technical supervision of the CSBC. This work of rescue constitutes the practical phase of the training course on the management of the collections, centered on the importance and the value of the Haitian cultural heritage, materials and agents of deterioration, the emergency intervention, managing disaster risk, the installation of healthy storage spaces and durable solutions of preventive conservation.

Recall that the training session began last Aug. 23 and ends next Sept. 10, an initiative of the CSBC, in partnership with the the international center of studies for the conservation and the restoration of the cultural goods, the Smithsonian Institute, the Canadian Conservation Institute in Ottawa, the Central Institute for Conservation of Belgrade [Serbia], for the executives Haitian of institutions working in the safeguarding of the cultural goods.

Within the framework of this project, laboratories of treatment and the restoration were installed, with the assistance of a staff of restorers placed at the disposal by Smithsonian Institute, American Institute for conservation and the American Commission of the blue shield.
