Haiti - Social : School Facilities for disabled students
At the recent inauguration of important development works made at the National School Edèze Gousse and to the Lycée Célie Lamour of Jacmel, Guerline Dardignac, the Chief of Staff of the Office of the Secretary of State for the Integration of Persons with Disabilities (BSEIPH) in his speech, recalled how it is essential to implement the accessibility standards and to comply with the legal requirement to make the built environment and buildings accessible "we want that the schools upgraded to make them accessible, participate to ensure the autonomy of students with disabilities by facilitating their movement within and outside the school building, is a clear signal of our commitment to human rights and the right to difference."
These works have included, sanitary facilities for disabled pupils and teachers, the construction of access ramps at all levels of buildings and the installations of handrails on the stairs.
At least six schools in various departments of the country will be upgraded and made accessible through a project funded up to 916.000 U.S. dollars by the U.S. Agency for International Development in Haït (USAID). These works will be carried out with the technical expertise of BSEIPH and the Ministry of Education to make these educational institutions symbols of an inclusive society.
Also in terms of inclusion of students with special needs, Nesmy Manigat, the Minister of Education revealed following of state exams, that 91 disabled young people have participated in official exams this year, including 16 for Bac "[...] 16 blind attended the baccalaureate exams, or 8 in Rhéto and 8 in Philo [...] We have taken all the measures for they have their exams in the same exam rooms, as other students in order to avoid exclusion."
