Haiti - Health : Graduation of 36 new midwives

Last Thursday, the First Lady, Sophia Martelly, in the presence of Dr. Florence D. Guillaume, the Minister of Health, Ms Mary Quettelie Chevalier, Director of the National Institute of Higher Training of Midwives (INSFS) , Dr. Ramiz Alakbarov, representing the United Nations Fund for Population (UNFPA), the sponsor of the promotion and a few other actors in the Haitian health system, attended the graduation ceremony of the promotion Ramiz Alakbarov, of 36 midwives, of which she is the sponsor, from the National Higher Institute of Training of midwives (INSFS).

The ceremony was an opportunity for the First Lady of the Republic of thank, congratulate and encourage the recipients.

Sophia Martelly thanked, congratulated and encouraged recipients and reminded them that the training of midwives responding to the need to make possible the exercise of a fundamental right: the right to life. That is to say, the right to be born under optimal conditions "Throughout your career, spare no efforts to do what is right and good. There is no greater satisfaction than that of accomplishment and a job well done. Duty that ignores the origin or nationality. Social or religious affiliations fall before an even bigger concept, the humanity [...]"

"No woman should die giving life. The work of midwives is a major step towards achieving the millennium goals," declared Alakbarov, the Midwives required to work in health institutions, including maternity of "Neonatal Care Basic Emergency" (BEmONC) but also in the obstetric and gynecology services and in the communities.

The INSFS, inaugurated October 7, 2013 and housed at the Maternity Isaïe Jeanty of Chancerelles, was established by government decision to meet a key requirement, which is to reduce maternal and child mortality and expanding support in health environement of pregnant women. The increase in the number of midwives meets the need to provide women who deliver a qualified personnel.
