Haiti - Education : Bamboo benches in schools

The Foundation for Sustainable Development and Integrated of Marmelade (FONDDIM), with the financial support of the Minustah (QIPs), delivered on the occasion of the reopening of classes, 50 benches made in Haiti from bamboo and fir wood [very comfortable] to the Community School K-Yvon of Miragoâne (Department of Nippes). The Bamboo is known for its durability, and resistance to insects, molds and combustion.

As part of this project, 737 benches of 3 seater in bamboo, 2 tables, 2 desks and 2 chairs will be distributed to 36 national schools with low resources of Artibonite, Centre, Nippes, North, Northwest and West.

This furniture are produced by 43 artisans of the commune of Marmelade trained as part of the Taiwanese technical assistanceusing bamboo grown by hundreds of farmers in the region as part of the reforestation and anti-erosion measures. The realization of this project has a triple impact namely supporting the educational reception, protecting the environment while making bamboo cultivation an income-generating profitable business.

This project is a joint effort of the Minustah and FONDDIM in collaboration with the Ministry of National Education and Vocational Training.
