Haiti - Politic : Toward the transition to electronic biometric passport

Following the vote in the lower house of the law on "Electronic Signature" earlier this month https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-12014-haiti-politic-law-on-electronic-signature-voted-in-the-lower-house.html Réginald Delva the Minister of Interior and Territorial Communities (MICT) held Sunday, the first of a series of meetings with officials of the Directorate of Immigration and Emigration (DIE) and the German firm "Giesecke & Devrient", contracted to accompany the DIE, to move gradually from ordinary passport MRZ (Machine readable Zone) where only the bottom two lines are read by a scanner, toward the more reliable and secure biometric ePassports.

The Minister Delva welcomes this legislative step taken, which will allow the DIE to meet the requirements of the Office of International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) [once the Act passed by the Senate]. Thus, the Haitian electronic passport, which will be issued by the DIE, will contain an embedded chip, including biometric data of Haitians, that will hold passports internationally accepted, allowing to strengthen controls at porder points and combat fraud in general.

Réginald Delva, pleads for a quick Senate vote on the same terms of the law on "Electronic Signature" to allow Haiti to comply with the 2015 ICAO deadlineto move from the "readable passport" as known today to "Electronic passport", the new international standard.

MICT provides the guarantee that this new passport, in addition to being unfalsifiable, will be more convenient and will constitute a bulwark against, among others, the identity theft.
