Haiti - Economy : Index of Consumer Prices (August 2014)

General Index of Consumer Prices (Base 100 in August 2004) increased during the month of August 2014, rising to 220 against 218.9 in July, a 5.1% yoy up by +0.5%, which represents a slowdown compared to the monthly variation of +0.7% of the previous month (4.9%).

The monthly variation in the month of August, results primarily from upward trend of the indices of consumption: "Food, Beverages and Tobacco" (+0.5%), "Clothing, Textiles and Footwear" (+ 2.1%) "Rent Housing, Energy and Water" (+0.5%), "Development and Maintenance Housing" (+ 0.4%) and "Health" (+0.7%).

The increase in "Food, Beverages and Tobacco" index is attributable to higher prices for: beef (+2.2%), pork (+ 3.5%), goat meat (+3.4%), chicken (+2.2 %), ham (+1.6%), fresh fish (+3.1%), herring (+ 1.9%), salt herring (+0.9%), cod (+2.4%), peanut butter (+ 0.9%) green peas (+1.1%), leek (+4.3%), onion (+0.9%), garlic (+ 1.1%), mushroom (+1.5%), carrot (+1.1%), tomato (+3.3%), malanga (+1.4%), potato (+1.8%) and cigarettes (+3.8%).

Note that the increase in "Clothing and Textiles, Footwear" index was attributable in particular to higher prices for products such: the tissues (+5.9%), costume, universal jacket (+2.2%), shirt (+1.6 %), pants for men (+1.4%), the t-shirt (+2.2%), the pants (+ 1.9%), making clothes (+1.5%) shoes and tennis (+2.1%) and sandals (+2.7%).

The increase in "Rent Housing, Energy and Water" index is linked particularly to items : housing rents (+0.2%), propane (0.8%) and charcoal (+0.3%). Prices for other items in the group remain unchanged.

The increase in the "Development and Maintenance Housing" index is particularly related to rising prices : of living room furniture (+0.8%), dining room (+0.9%), bed (+1.3%) mattress (+1.6%), the web (+0.9%), refrigerator (+1.4%) and the wages of domestic workers (+0.6%).

Inflationary pressures of "Health" function is primarily due to the fees for physicians (+1.1%) and hospitalization costs (+0.9%).

General Price Index by Region (Variation on a month) :

Metropolitan Area: +0.5% (Includes Port-au-Prince, Delmas, Petion-Ville, Carrefour and Croix des Bouquets.)

Rest West: +0.5% (includes departments SouthEast and West excluding the Metropolitan Area)

North: +0.4% (including the departments of North, Northeastern and Northwest)

South: +0.5% (including departments of South Grand Anse and Nippes)

Transversal: +0.6% (including departments of Centre and Artibonite)
