Haiti - Economy : Salt Marshes, creation of nearly 46,000 man-days of work

As part of the program of job creation implemented by the Prime Minister and the Presidency, the salt marsh component, started last July, in the second section of the town of Anse-Rouge (Sources Chaudes), under the supervision of the agronomist Lenide Joseph of the Ministry of Agriculture, aims to provide people around 46,000 man-days of work and reinforces the investments already made in the context of post Sandy activities on salt marshes.

These works creators of income, strengthen the economy of the zone and make it possible to back in production saltmarsh abandoned for economic reasons, after being damaged by weather (Jeanne, Ike, Hannah, Sandy...)

The main activities are to clean the bottom of ponds and dams and the strengthening of banks. The cleaning of bottom very distressing is done mostly by men, as women, they clean the dikes are harvesting salt in ponds.

To date more than 240 contracts have already been signed between the ministry and the owners of salines and nearly 10,000 mans-days jobs created (70% men and 30% women). In addition, 10 young professionals from the area were hired to oversee the work. It is important to note that to participate in this program, the person must be provided with its title and a piece of identification (NIF, CIN, Passport, Driving License...) The average cost per basin amounted to 25,000,00 Gourds.

Everyone involved in this work have praised the program and expressed the hope that the Government, through the Ministry of Agriculture, should renew this initiative each year.
