Haiti - Politic : The Hunt for Illegals is open to the Bahamas

Since the implementation in early November of the new migration measures adopted by the Government of the Bahamas, our compatriots in an irregular situation, live in fear of being arrested and deported. Recall that nearly 70,000 immigrants (18% of the population of the Bahamas) living in this area, most in an irregular situation, including whose 20.000 to 50.000 Haitians (Source International Organization for Migration - IOM).

Under the new measures, all the foreigners living in the country without residence papers will be repatriated to their country of origin. To work in the Bahamas, people must now obtain a work permit from an employer, BEFORE coming to The Bahamas. In the absence of this state-approved permit, no foreigners are allowed to work in the Bahamas. Moreover, under the new rules, children born of illegal parents will also deported with their parents.

If one found unjust and racist immigration policy in the Dominican Republic, the Bahamas apply much more severely the law, since it is not even a question of regularization of the immigration status of people. We must remember that each week, illegal land by boat and that this migration flows that does not slow down, only exacerbates an already difficult economic situation in the Bahamas.

Faced with this situation the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Haitians Living Abroad follow carefully the development of this situation, particularly concerning the Haitian nationals. Haitian Chancellery with representatives of the two ministries, established a work cell (Task Force), with a composition open-ended, to better assess the situation and allow the Government of Haiti to respond appropriately.
