Haiti - Reconstruction : Michaëlle Jean no longer Special Envoy for Haiti

Following her election on 30 November as the Secretary General of the International Organization of the Francophonie (OIF) https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-12624-haiti-politic-michaelle-jean-succeeds-to-abdou-diouf-at-the-head-of-the-oif.html , Michaëlle Jean, ends this Friday, December 19, her Special Envoy mission for Haiti, entrusted to her by Irina Bokova, Director General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)

After her four-year term, Michaëlle Jean wishes to express of everything that has been accomplished since the 2010 earthquake "I saw a country devastated and deeply mourns by 300,000 dead and nearly a million and a half people were left homeless. I saw it get back to hope and to commit everything to make life a triumph. Today over 92% of the victims have been relocated. Haiti has gotten better, but there is still much to do."

Recall that since she took office in October 2010, Mrs. Jean has invited the international community to respect the generous promises of aid manifested after the earthquake "It was necessary to ensure that the financial commitments made at the special meeting of the UN, in March 2010, are honored and that the solidarity expressed will result not in charity and assistantship, but by a strategic and targeted support over the long term," declared Michaëlle Jean.

She also supported the approach and UNESCO programs so that they bind themselves to the objectives of the Haitian government in the implementation of the Action Plan for National Recovery and Development of the country for the territorial refoundations, institutional, social and economic.

"This plan has guided each of my action as well as the search for funds and partners that I have gathered around the overhaul of the education system, the safeguarding and enhancement of the rich cultural and historical heritage, the protection of the environment, human rights, strengthening the rule of law, land use planning and management of risks and disasters. As for projects funded by my mission, I wanted that they meet the long-term development of the country, with a sake of ownership by the Haitian for a true guarantee of sustainability."

Michaëlle Jean considers that the efforts made to date for the reconstruction of Haiti must be maintained, beyond the many difficulties courses "All hopes are allowed for the Haitian nation reborn to itself, provided the stability, dialogue, concern for the public interest and a true national harmony are at the rendezvous. There is the perpetual challenge."
