Haiti - Climate : Evaluation of Monday, 11,000 families affected

Following the sudden and violent weather phenomena (rain and wind) that hit Port-au-Prince and surrounding areas of Thomazeau, Ganthier, Fond Verettes, Gressier and southern regions, like Petit Goave and Islands Cayimites on Friday, September 24, the latest assessment of Sunday night shows that nearly 11,000 families need housing assistance, some of whom live in buildings affected by the earthquake.

Protection Civile envisages to use its emergency funds while waiting for the approval of a budget of 63,000 dollars which must be subjected for approval today Monday at the department of the West.

The cluster (1) CCCM has evaluated 300 camps which 162 were identified as having humanitarian needs [mainly shelters and drainage]. Distributions were made in 26 camps and are ongoing in eight camps. Distributions have already been planned in 33 other camps. Assessments to date indicate that approximately 11.000 families need housing assistance. Shelter cluster partners have so far distributed 5.479 tarpaulins and 468 tents to 3.208 families, representing one third of the cases identified so far. Assessments are ongoing and new needs may apply. The cluster gives priority to the distribution of tarpaulins, as they can be used to repair the survival structures and are more durable than tents.

Electricity of Haiti (EDH) is working to repair its network. On the 16 of the 27 sectors affected by the weather on Friday, EDH hopes to restore electricity by the end of the week.

Protection Civile has asked more than 6,000 hygiene kits to be provided by WASH cluster partners to each family receiving a replacement shelter. Camp committees are working to repair latrines and showers. The cluster has received reports confirming the destruction of 200 latrines.

The United Nations police in conjunction with the Haitian National Police (PNH) have conducted 191 patrols in camps, no major incidents were reported. 200 soldiers [peacekeepers] had provided security at the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in the distributions of tarpaulins, in some camps.

(1) To learn more about Cluster

Clusters are co-ordinating committees and networks of humanitarian resources, private partners, international agencies or government (local and national) who meet as often as the situation requires. Each committee is specialized in one area (health, food, water, environment, camps, education, transport etc. ...). Clustering process information from stakeholders on the land (on their mission) and route requests to the authorities concerned to meet the needs and finding solutions to population problems, it monitors the vital aid operations . Inter Cluster meetings allow for the coordination of diverse aspects involved in certain situations.
