Haiti - Economy : Transport strike, the Government calls for calm

Following the negotiations undertaken with unions under the patronage of President Martelly, including an agreement with the National Front of Haitians Unions (FNSH), it was agreed a downward revision of fuel prices at the pump starting this Monday, February 2, 2015 https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-13074-haiti-flash-fuel-price-decrease.html

- Gasoline 95 (-7.5%) down from 215 to 210 gourdes (-15 gourdes)

- Diesel (-9.27%) down from 177 to 167 gourdes (-15 gourdes)

- Kerosene (-6.3%) down from 171 to 161 (-10 gourdes)

However, despite this drop in prices, trade unions including the Association of Owners and Drivers of Haiti (APCH) and the National Action of drivers (ANC) consider that this reduction is very insufficient. They announce the paralysis of public transport in the country this Monday and Tuesday, February 2, 2015. Note that this strike is supported by the "table de concertation" of parties of the radical opposition and several organizations of civil society.

Mehu Changeux, the President of the Association of Owners and Drivers of Haiti (APCH), which had issued a 8-days ultimatum to the Government https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-13016-haiti-economy-the-apch-issued-an-ultimatum-to-the-government.html claiming reductions from 25 to 100 gourdes. Duclos Bénisoit, President of the National Action of drivers (ANC) requires from the State a reduction of at least 100 gourdes on the price of a gallon of gasoline...

In a note, the Government informs the population "that all measures will be taken by the National Police of Haiti to ensure the safety of lives and property and allow everyone to freely go about their business.

The Ministry of Communications, on behalf of the Government of the Republic, is launching an appeal for calm to the population and invites once again all political actors to cultivate the spirit of tolerance and dialogue for the safeguarding of Republican values."
