Haiti - Politic : Haiti-Canada Municipal Cooperation

At the 25th edition of the International Development Week, the partners of Municipal Cooperation Program (PCM2) Haiti-Canada, represented by Claude Dauphin, the outgoing President of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM), the Mayor of Sainte-Juile, Suzanne Roy, the Union of Quebec Municipalities (UMQ) and Denis Coderre, Mayor of Montreal underlined the importance of international cooperation in the municipal field.

Claude Dauphin pointed out that "The opening of a House of Local Governments in December https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-12716-haiti-politic-opening-of-the-house-of-local-governments.html is a good example of municipal cooperation internationally. This new institution will help the Haitian municipalities build credible and effective local governments with greater distribution of power and resources to local authorities."

For her part the president of the UMQ, Suzanne Roy recalled "For 5 years, the UMQ and its members showed their solidarity with the Haitian people and are proud to have contributed to the implementation of several initiatives aimed at concretely help local elected officials to restore the institutional capacity of communities affected by the earthquake. The second phase of the Municipal Cooperation Program Haiti-Canada, whose UMQ is a partner, will allow to continue the efforts and complete the institutional strengthening of local government in Haiti."

"The International Development Week is an opportunity to highlight the municipal commitment to build a better world. Whether in Haiti or elsewhere on the planet, municipal employees contribute to the progress and advancement of developing countries. The projects carried by Montreal to Port-au-Prince as the rehabilitation of public spaces and lighting in several neighborhoods, are excellent examples," declared the mayor of Montreal, Denis Coderre.

MCP2 is a five-year program (2014 to 2019) funded by the Government of Canada through the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development (DFATD). Its $21.4 million budget includes a $19.1 million contribution from the DFATD and a contribution of services valued at $2.3 million from FCM, the City of Montreal and the UMQ. The Haiti-Canada Municipal Cooperation Program benefits from the financial support of the Government of Canada through the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development (DFATD).
