Haiti - Social : 11,000 U.S. visa fraud cases

Friday at the US Embassy, Robert Hannan, the US Consul General in Haiti, provided an update on how to get a visa and on cases of fraud registered.

The anti-fraud department has talked about 11,000 cases of fraud, mostly related to the visitor visa or applicants provide false documents or false information about their family situation, professional and financial. The US Consul urged the visa applicant to provide only true information when filling in the application form. Note that Haiti with the Dominican Republic are the two countries where registered the highest number of cases of fraud.

Concerning the visa obtainment, the Consul Hannan indicated We believe that if our applying understand our procedures they will be less inclined to pay money to someone who claims to have specific information on how to get a visa," stating that "[. ..] the only way to get a visa [...] is to get an interview with the consular officer and come and discuss his intention of coming to the United States [...] I can guarantee that there is no other way to get the visitor visa [...] If there are people who tell you that there is no other way to obtain the visa, they are lying to you."

He recalled that a visitor visa applicant must only pay an amount, paid to the SogeXpress for application fees and another at the US Embassy in exchange of visa. "We encourage Haitians to avoid these criminals who are abusing their good faith [...] we also want to protect our applying preventing them from getting involved in business, which could see them get permanently denied entry into the United States."

Recall that in 2014, more than 100,000 Haitians held a valid visitors visa for United States. The section of the Embassy of visitor visas processed more than 80,000 requests and the Section immigrant visas, issued over 11,000 visas.
