Haiti - Heritage : Rescue of art at the National Palace

ISPAN continues its campaign to save works of art.. The previous month, under the supervision of technicians of the institute held the delicate recovery operation of two monumental paintings that were in the National Palace and adorned the lobby of the office of the First Lady of the Republic, on the second floor.

These canvases, forming a diptych, were offered in 1999 to the Republic of Haiti by the General Counsel of Guadeloupe, Madame Lucette Michaux-Chevry to mark the 250th anniversary of the founding of the city of Port-au- Prince. They are signed by Marie-José Limousis Pédurand and Bruno, both visual artists from Guadeloupe and measure 300 cm by 300 cm.

The first canvas signed Limouza is considered "prima facie" unrecoverable by Patrick Villaire technician at the Rescue Center of Cultural Property (Centre de Sauvetage de Biens Culturels CSBC), responsible for the operation. The second, signed Pédurand can be easily restored.

Architectural surveys of the National Palace destroyed by the earthquake of January are currently being finalized. These operations consist primarily of the acquisition of spatial data (morphology, dimensions and finish sampling) of the monument took two months and are part of the preliminary step of measures initiated by ISPAN since June. The campaign to save works of art still in the rubble of the National Palace will therefore be intensified.
