Haiti - Economy : ADIH concerned about the rise in smuggling 01/07/2015 09:43:41
Carl-Frédéric Madsen, President of the Association of the Industries of Haiti (ADIH) expresses once again its deep concern at the upsurge of smuggling mainly at the land border with the Dominican Republic, but also in provincial ports and in the capital. He stressed that this smuggling creates unfair competition that threatens the survival of local companies who can not meet their obligations due to this competition and are in danger of bankruptcy "In addition this smuggling penalizes the State who loses substantial revenue, of the order of $300 million and weakens national security through the introduction of illicit goods [...]" Madsen found incomprehensible that convincing actions are not taken to curb the scourge, while the State seeks income to carry out its projects "The smugglers no longer hesitate to enter daylight tons of goods in various points along the land border, under cover of binational market. Smuggling is also done at night or during the closing days of customs. ADIH urges the State to take urgent steps to eliminate this scourge, which threatens the economy of the Nation and says he is ready to provide its unconditional support "This fight against smuggling will encourage domestic production and create new investment opportunities if needed to increase the offer of employment," concluded Carl-Frédéric Madsen.
