Haiti - Diplomacy : Haiti calls for international involvement in the repatriations case

Earlier this week, on the sidelines of the CARIFESTA XII, Irwin LaRocque, Secretary General of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) accompanied by Ambassador Colin Granderson, CARICOM Deputy Secretary responsible for External and Community Relations, met in Port-au-Prince Lener Renaud, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Haiti.

Chancellor Renaud presented to his interlocutors a summary of the current situation on the border between Haiti and the Dominican Republic. While thanking CARICOM for its support, he called for greater involvement of the international community on the issue of migration between the two nations of the island. The Foreign Minister of Haiti and the Secretary General of CARICOM, have agreed on the necessity of such involvement in this very sensitive issue.

For his part Ambassador LaRocque informed the Chancellor Renaud that CARICOM actively pushing the United Nations to establish a ground surveillance system at the border to ensure, among other things, that the repatriation process does not violate the human rights of migrants.
