Haiti - Economy : Restriction of products from DR, also a protectionist measure

The Association of Industries of Haiti (ADIH), states that the items part of the non-exhaustive list of products from the Dominican Republic, forbidden of transport by road and which must now use sea or air https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-15156-haiti-notice-import-ban-by-road-of-certain-products-from-dr.html not exclusively target products "Dominicans" but all goods smuggled (not paying taxes in Haiti), which make unfair competition in the local market.

ADIH explains that official entries points are not respected and parallel roads are open every time measures are taken to protect the local market. Small and large local importers in good standing with the tax authorities, undergo front, this unfair competition. Stressing that the country must regulate its commercial traffic and recover revenue lost due to contraband that has developed especially since 12 January 2010.

The Association indicates that accompanying measures are already in place (joint police-customs-DGI brigades monitoring of Lake Azuei, tariff codes etc...) to strengthen these prohibition provisions. ADIH stresses that other supportive measures should be considered as soon as possible to assist border populations, such as the redevelopment of border markets that need to be reorganized.

Furthermore, it emphasizes on the public awareness of these measures, which should be the subject of a media campaign. Additionally, ADIH believes that the Government should also sensitize the international community about the validity of these measures to promote investment and reduce unemployment in the country.

Recall that ADIH participates in most meeting of the "Task Force" of the Unit for Combating Smuggling (ULCC), which is an interministerial committee to which is invited the private sector.
