Haiti - Economy : Inauguration of Port of Petit-Goâve

Wednesday President Michel Martelly, went to Petit-Goâve, accompanied in particular by Victor H. St. Louis, Director General of Customs (AGD) and Alix Célestin, Director General of the National Port Authority (APN) for the inauguration of the port of the city, whose works that lasted 10 months, funded to the tune of 2.3 million US dollars by the Haitian State (2,330.000) will allow to receive boats of 2,000 tons.

Renovate with new customs offices and Bonded warehouses, conforming to International Code "Ship and Port Security" (ISPS), the port of Petit-Goâve falls within the redevelopment works of the territory, of the improving of the competitiveness and development of Haiti.

"Through this realization, I see a significant jump from the entire region on the path of an irreversible development. With new offices and warehouses, the port is able to play its full role in the economic development of the region. With this port, Petit-Gôave opens on the country and the world. [...]

We must open the town of Petit-Goâve with what it has of more beautiful, so that it becomes an area that attracts more tourists. I thank and congratulate all the players who participated in this project and I ask you to take care of it because it is a State property," declared the President Martelly, in the presence among others of Philippe Cinéas, Secretary of State for Public Works, Éric Prevost Junior, Director of Maritime and Navigation Service of Haiti (SEMANAH), the AGD employees, of the Unit of the Port of Cabotage of Petit-Goâve and Port workers, adding that these positive transformations throughout the country carried out during his administration are "stepping stones for initiatives likely to change, both our image, our economy and our life of people."

Open to international trade, the new port is expected to connect the city of Petit-Goâve and surrounding to the different points of the coast, facilitating the transport of passengers and merchandise trade, open up spaces of agricultural and handicraft production and develop the tourist attractions of the area.

After cutting the inaugural ribbon of the Unit of the Port of Cabotage of Petit-Goâve, Michel Martelly has conducted a tour of the wharf of the city.

"It is in this effort of continuous improvement of our record in global competitiveness indices, which are located the rehabilitation of the Port of Cap-Haitien, the construction of the North Quay of the Port of Port-au-Prince, of the Unit of the Port of Cabotage (UPC) of Jérémie and of la Saline as well as construction of the Port of Petit-Goâve that we take pleasure to inaugurate today," affirmed the Head of State.
