Haiti - Elections : 234 arrests Sunday

Sunday at a press conference at the official residence of Prime Minister Evans Paul, at the end of the election day, Godson Orelus, the Director General of the National Police of Haiti (PNH) revealed that the police had made 234 arrests on the whole territory and seized 13 firearms and 4 vehicles. Furthermore, he indicated that a policeman carrying ballots in his private vehicle, in the constituency of Cite Soleil, was also arrested and put in isolation.

Pierre Louis Opont, the President of the Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) said he was satisfied of the work of the PNH, which has ensured the success of elections by drawing lessons from 9 August.

"These people will be judged according to legal prescription, the Ministry of Justice will crack with the utmost rigor against anyone who violates the Law" firmly said Pierre-Richard Casimir, the Minister of Justice

The Prime Minister Paul Evans, said the arrests and Sunday's incidents have not altered the normal functioning of elections "We will have zero tolerance for those who violate the electoral law. The authorities will punish them," stressing that those arrested "are mostly of political agitators who tried to be representatives of political parties in the voting centers."

Welcoming the peaceful behavior of the population, the Prime Minister concluded by saying "[...] the outcome of the election day is satisfactory."
