Haiti - Education : 5,000 persons unable to read or write in the Public Service

After an awareness campaign of 3 weekend which ended on December 12 in the 11 communes of Nippes department, the Secretariat of State for Literacy (SEA) should launch shortly a Literacy Program for 100,000 persons in this department.

To do this, 3,600 instructors and 350 supervisors will be hired in all communal sections where Alpha centers will be placed stating "This is an act of volunteering, by con bonus of 6,000 gourdes for instructors and 8,000 gourdes for supervisors will be granted to them at the end of

study cycle of 4 months," adding "with the support of the Primature , we will provide a hot meal at the end of each session to the various beneficiaries of the program."

Furthermore, Jean Wilberson Timothée noted that a report of the Office of Management and Human Resources (OMRH) indicates that about 5,000 persons at the staff level of the Public Service, are unable to read or write "We will forward a correspondence to all state institutions to send the list of their personnel found in this situation in order to eradicate this scourge within the Haitian population."

The total budget for this program, which brings together Cuban and UNESCO partners, is 50 million gourdes over 4 months. After Nippes, the Southeast department will be the next target region.
