Haiti - Health : High increase in number of cases of fever ZIKA

According to the Directorate of Epidemiology of Laboratory and of Research (DELR) of the Ministry of Public Health, on the evolution of the outbreak of ZIKA in Haiti the number of cases for the period from January 24 to 30 is 204 (42% men for 58% women) with a predominance of cases in three departments: West 56 cases (27.45%) (including 31 in Pétion-ville), Artibonite: 53 (25.98%) (including 42 in Verettes) and the Center: 32 (15.69%) (including 32 in Mirebalais).

We note a clear increase and acceleration in the number of cases over the last 3 weeks, while there were "only" 96 cases the week of January 17 to 23, for a total of 329 notified cases (dated January 30) in Haiti since the first confirmed case https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-16333-haiti-flash-5-cases-officially-confirmed-of-zika-fever-in-haiti.html

Distribution of cases ZIKA by department: 100 (30.40%) in the West, 70 (21.28%) in the North, 59 (17.93%) in the Artibonite, 47 (14.29%) in the center, 15 (4.56%) in the Nippes, 11 (3.34%) in the South East, 11 (3.34%) in the South, 6 (1.82%) in the Northeast, 6 (1, 82%) in Grand Anse 6 (1.82%) and 4 (1.22%) in the North West.

Recall that the prevention and control of ZIKA are the same as those of Chikungunya because the disease is transmitted by the same vector (Aedes)

Communities :

- Identification, treatment and destruction of breeding sites for mosquitoes

- Fumigation in targeted areas

Personal prevention measures :

- Sleeping under mosquito nets

- Wear long clothing that covers extremities (arms and legs).

- Apply to the skin mosquito creams

- Cover the containers with water at home.

Zika virus is transmitted to humans by the bite of an infected mosquito. The clinical syndrome is known as Zika fever. The infection is symptomatic only in 18% of cases, and when it is, the diagnosis can be difficult to makes, the symptoms can be confused with those of, among other dengue or chikungunya. After incubation for 3 to 12 days, the presence of virus in blood is generally observed for 2 to 5 days. The Zika fever is self-limiting, the symptoms during 4 to 7 days. There are no antiviral against the Zika and treatment based solely on managing symptoms.
