Rene Preval, President of Haiti on Tuesday launched an appeal for calm after clashes which opposed demonstrators at UN peacekeepers in Cap Haitien and Hinche.

"Creating chaos and instability has never provided a solution in a country which crosses difficult moments", said the president in a recorded message "The firing of guns, throwing bottles, barricades of burning tires will not eliminate the germ of cholera. Instead, it will prevent patients from receiving care and deliver medicines where necessary". He concludes with a call for continued solidarity with the national authorities and the international community.

How the "Head of State" can state that the weapons are not good ways to solve the problems of cholera (which is true), and in addition, to keep silence on the commandos armed of his political platform INITE, who bully and terrorize the population and opposition candidates to 11 days before the election ?

Should we see in this deliberate silence, the confirmation that the use of weapons is most effective when talking about politics or that the election justifies the means ? It would have been better, that the President began by launching an appeal for calm to his own troops, instead of relaying the Minustah instructions without thinking...
