Haiti - Heritage : Hyppolite market, the deadline of January 12, 2011, still stands

Following the construction of the foundations of the new Hall North, restoration site of Hyppolite Market was ready in late September 2010 to receive the metal parts manufactured in the United States by the firm Helmark Steel.

This first stock of beams, columns, purlins and rafters forming the main frame, arrived at Port-au-Prince on September 26, 2010 and was immediately transported to the site. Installation work began the next day and ended 15 days later.

Meanwhile, began the work of covering the floor of the south hall. This resumption of paving uses as possible Barzac sandstone slabs (60 cm x 60 cm), retrieved from the building. Missing tiles are replaced by concrete decorated with motifs. The recovery of bricks also continues. They are all cleaned, the traces of previous mortar and gently cleaned without removing its patina. A number of them were recovered from buildings demolished by the earthquake of January 12 and chosen for their physical characteristics similar to those of the market (color, chemical composition, mechanical strength, etc...). They are destinated for the perimeter wall to be topped by a metal mesh and welded wrought, as it was originally.

Currently, the structure of the new North Hall is ready to receive the fastener elements and coverage: fixed louvre windows, spandrels, laths, plates, etc. ...

Meanwhile, the place was equipped with lighting towers. The work schedule will be substantially changed from the month of November. Teams of workers will be able to take turns and work until late at night. The date of inauguration of the restored Hyppolite Market, set for January 12, 2011, still stands...
