Haiti - Diplomacy : USA warns Haiti on delays

Tuesday, Kenneth Merten, the Special Coordinator of the US State Department to Haiti, in an interview to the Creole journal on the waves of the Voice of America, warned Haiti that the United States and the international community might reconsider their financial support to the Haitian elections, if the authorities were slow to revive the electoral process.

While recognizing that this is not to the American Government to decide on a Verification Commission, he nevertheless recalled that this option was not provided in the agreement of 6 February, and responded to a request to the losing candidates of the last elections "I understand that there are some who claim the creation of that Commission. But it makes me wonder why we have international observers, including observers from the European Union and the OAS ? All these bodies observe elections around the world, especially in Western Hemisphere. They judge the elections in Haiti following the same standards elsewhere. They have not seen major irregularities in Haiti. But there are some politicians who evoke massive fraud. So far I have not seen evidence of these allegations."

Stressing that if Haiti wants a Commission, that it do it quickly "[...] Because we look forward to continue to give our support to the Haitian people and we can not do it with a government that is not elected democratically" warning that there will be many problems, if that Verification Commission aims to eliminate one or both candidates, which came top according to official results.

In addition, Kenneth Merten deplored the apparent lack of will to get things done quickly, "I have the impression that the political class in Haiti is not in a hurry to get things done," calling on politicians to find a solution to the crisis in order to allow Haiti to continue to benefit from international assistance.
