Haiti - FLASH : 2 day strike announced in public transit

Following the decision of Government Privert to increase price of fuel at the pump of 30 gourdes for Gasoline and Diesel and to force the government to withdraw this unpopular measure, the main trade unions in the public transit sector including among others the Association of Owners and Drivers of Haiti (APCH), the Union of Public Transporters Haitians (STPH), the National Platform of Unions of Transport Faithful (PNSTF) and the Autonomous Confederation of Haitian Workers (CATH) announce two day strike on Wednesday 25 and Thursday, August 26, 2016.

Anderson Jacques Desroches, the spokesman of STPH, stressed that his organization requires the Government to withdraw of the unilateral decision as a precondition for any negotiations on the price of fuel.

Leaders of trade union are especially angry that they were not involved in the discussions for this rise in prices at the pump while the National Association of Petroleum Products Distributors (Anadipp) revealed Monday, to have been informed two weeks before the entry into force of the new prices.

Trade unionists claim that this increase will cause an increase in prices of basic commodities and accentuate poverty and anger of the population.
