Haiti - Environment : «Towards the emergence of the new man» dixit Desras

Monday, Simon Dieuseul Desras, Minister of Environment and Jean Beauvois Dorsonne, Minister of National Education signed an MoU around Education related to the environment.

This solidarity and citizenship process initiated by the two Ministries is listed on Articles 74-76 of the Framework decree of January 2006, which states that the Haitian State, through the Ministries of Environment and Education, is responsible for promoting environmental education for the benefit of the whole society and develop strategies for its integration in Haitian education curriculum.

In his speech, the Minister Desras declared "

[...] Environmental education must be rightly regarded as essential lever in the process of changing mentalities. What goes in line with the proclamation of the Stockholm Conference. The school environmental education and outside school should be designed with a view to preparing present and future generations to better take care of the environment.

In this context, Article 19 of the Declaration of Principles thereunder, emphasizes the need to design a learning about the environment. Meanwhile, the Rio Declaration states that the best way to deal with Environment question is to ensure the participation of all citizens.

On this momentum, education, information, awareness and environmental education should play a key role in safeguarding the ecological balance and the process of national awareness. Education imposes as an immense enterprise of behavior change that must integrate the education system and covering both the school that university.

It is appropriate to note that the signing of this MOU will serve as a motto to strengthen existing efforts, to work on the emergence of the new man. Nevertheless the principle of common but differentiated responsibility, the compulsory involvement of all the forces of society will be highly sought. The official and collective action leading to results is the one that values all efforts whether private or individual.

[...] I conclude by saying that the greatest challenge facing us today is to take an idea that seems abstract 'Environmental Education in Haiti for sustainable development' and in make a reality for all Haitians citizens."
