Haiti - Elections : OAS sends two assistance missions at the request of President Preval

At 5 days of publication (eventual ?) the results of the first round, President René Préval asked yesterday assistance from the Organization of American States (OAS). This assistance will result in sending of two new technical missions in support of the electoral process. In a statement, Fritz Longchamp of the General Secretariat of the Presidency explained that this request aims to reassure all stakeholders in the process.

The first technical mission will have for task to support verification of the tabulation while the second will provide legal technical assistance in the litigation stage of the contestation process. These two missions are expected Wednesday in Port-au-Prince.

Rene Preval also thanked the Secretary General of the OAS for the work of the OEA/CARICOM observation mission led by Ambassador Colin Granderson. He also appeals to the civic conscience of all Haitians, and in particular the political actors involved, so that in respect of the constitution and the law, a successful outcome to the crisis is found in the interest of strengthening democracy in Haiti.
