The town hall of Port-au-Prince began for two weeks a vast campaign of rubbish collecting in several points of the capital. On weekends this operation is largely supported by the State, whereas during the week it is provided exclusively by the Municipal Administration, with all its equipment including a new fleet of trucks compactors of waste with rear loading.

According to the mayor of Port-au-Prince, Youri Chevry the first phase of this campaign, is largely aimed at the Boulevard La Saline where the municipal authorities supported by the police want to meet the challenge of ridding garbage, of street shopkeepers and small shopkeepers and make this boulevard totally accessible to motorists on 6 tracks as has been the case in the past "During our operations the residents, the merchants express their satisfaction and say to support our Municipal Administration in this approach."

Mayor Chévry, aware that there is still a long way to go, recalled that his administration was currently working on the best approach to sustainable solid waste management, identifying an alternative to improve public services for solid waste management and ultimately define the best way for recycling waste. The City of Port-au-Prince is ready to face to face its responsibilities with the support of all partners both public and private.

Recall that Port-au-Prince and the metropolitan area produce each day on average between 6,000 and 8,000 tons of waste. At the capital, only 28% of wastes are collected. The capacity of waste collection of the Service Metropolitan Solid Waste Collection (SMCRS) is only 13% of the volume of garbage produced each day. For their part, private operators collect daily 15%. In summary, 72% of waste produced in the metropolitan area are not picked up.
