Haiti - Elections : Reactions of Canada to the victory of Jovenel Moïse

Following the victory of Jovenel Moïse in the first round of the Haitian presidential election, the Honourable Stéphane Dion, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and the Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of International Development and La Francophonie, today issued the following statement :

"Canada warmly congratulates Jovenel Moïse on his election as the president of Haiti following a long electoral process.

"Canada applauds the work of the Provisional Electoral Council and the Haitian government for successfully holding the first round of the repeat of the presidential election.

"We welcome the conclusion of the electoral process and the return to constitutional order. We look forward to working with the new president of Haiti and participating in the economic and social development of the country, continuing to promote our common democratic values and working together to forge new partnerships between Canada and Haiti.

"Haiti faces many challenges in the coming years. It is therefore essential that the Haitian political actors respect the definitive results of the presidential election, avoid any and all incitement to violence and work together to ensure the stability of their nation and prosperity for all Haitians."
