Haiti - FLASH : Terrible accident, about 20 dead, dozens of wounded
Sunday occurred a terrible accident at Morne La Crête, a locality in the north-west of Haiti, on national road #5, about fifty kilometers from Port-de-Paix, when a bus, registered TP-48622, ensuring the route Port-de-Paix / Port-au-Prince carrying 64 passengers overturned after entering violently collided with a truck...
According to information from the National Ambulance Center (CAN) of Haiti there would be twenty deaths, of which 11 people died on the spot. Several tens of wounded were transported to Gros Morne hospital and to Gonaives to receive care that their condition requires. Various relief agencies went on site of the accident, some of the injured are in serious condition.
At the moment the causes of the accident remain unknown, apart from the fact that the road is in very bad condition and the accident occurred in a work area, the bus was not in very good operation condition. According to testimonies from survivors, during the journey the driver made several stops so that the mechanic of the bus repairs mechanical problems. Moreover, it would appear that during these stops the driver would have consumed alcohol and that at the time of the accident where he lost control of his vehicle, he was drunk. The driver who survived, fled at the time of the accident...
This is the first major road accident in Haiti for this new year...
