Haiti - Environment : Launch of the work of the National Botanical Garden

Monday at Source Zabeth (Ganthier, West Dept.), will be held the launching ceremony of the development works of the National Botanical Garden of Haiti (JBNH).

The implementation of this major structure of public education, conservation of biodiversity and of promotion of sustainable development is the result of a partnership between different actors, including the Ministries of Education, Environment, Agriculture, of the Faculty of Agronomy and Veterinary Medicine, the State University of Haiti, the Haitian National Commission for Cooperation with UNESCO, the Ganthier City Council and the Board of Directors of the 2nd Communal Section Balan, of the same commune.

It should be noted that since September 2013, the Permanent Secretariat of the National Commission has led this initiative, under the recommendation of Michaëlle Jean, at the time Special Envoy of UNESCO for Haiti. With the support of several botanical gardens of the world, the various partners believed the moment had come to officially launch this project in order to mobilize the stakeholders and the resources necessary for the development of the National Botanical Garden of Haiti.

In addition, an international training workshop for national executives will be held from 6 to 9 March 2017.

Note that Haiti is one of the few countries not to have a National Botanic Garden, although this is a requirement of Article 256 of the amended Haitian Constitution of 1987.
