Haiti - Environment : Ban lifted on Lake Azuei

The latest results of various, Physico-chemical analysis made with the water from Lake Azuei, particularly in the area of Fond Parisien/Malpasse where the death of an abnormal quantity of fish had been reported since December 24, 2010, confirms today that all the parameters are returned to the normal average.

The Ministries of the Interior and Local Authorities, of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Rural Development and the Ministry of Environment, encourage people to resume fishing activities throughout the lake Azuei, including the sale and consumption of fish, while taking into account the existing regulations. The technicians of the various Ministries concerned continue to closely monitor the situation with regular analysis, the Government will keep the public informed.

Conscious of the fact that Lake Azuei represents a unique ecological heritage and that its fragility was laid bare, the government announced that will strengthen the process of implementing of the National Environmental Management Plan. This environmental management plan will be completed, submitted and discussed with all relevant stakeholders and should be strengthened by the adoption of a draft law.

Recall that the technical missions from the Ministries of Environment and Agriculture took samples of water samples and dead fish in areas of Fond Parisien and Malpasse. The initial results of analysis conducted in Lake Azuei shows a lack of oxygen due to the use of calcareous materials in the heightening work of the road section affected by the rising waters of the lake, would be the cause of death of fish. "These materials come from the hills surrounding the lake rich in limestone. The dissolution and mixing of these compounds limestone appears to have temporarily changed the natural acidity of the water in this area, causing a scarcity of oxygen at the level of the lake". It seems that this hypothesis was confirmed and the localized imbalance of the Lake Azuei, is again back to normal.

This return to normalcy, which was done naturally, does not eliminate the cause of this imbalance and leaves the risk that in similar circumstances, that such situation can happen in the future.
