Thursday, the UN Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution in which it decided to extend the mandate of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (Minustah) until 15 October 2017 and then to replace it with another smaller peacekeeping mission, the United Nations Mission for Justice Support in Haiti (Minujusth) https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-20653-haiti-flash-the-un-voted-final-departure-of-the-minustah-in-october.html

In this resolution, the fifteen members of the Council decided that the military component of the Minustah "shall gradually drawdown during the final six-month period, fully withdrawing from Haiti by 15 october 2017".

They also decided to create a new peacekeeping mission in Haiti, the Minujusth, which shall be composed of up to seven Formed Police Units (FPUs) (or 980 FPU personnel) and 295 Individual Police Officers (IPOs), , for an initial périod of six months from 16 October 2017 until 15 April 2018.

They also agreed that Minujusth should be responsible for assisting the Government of Haiti in strengthening the institutions of the rule of law in Haiti; To support and further develop the Haitian National Police, and to monitor, report on and analyze the situation in relation to human rights.

The members of the Council further decided that Minujusth would be headed by a Special Representative of the Secretary-General, who will also play a good offices and advocacy role at the political level to ensure the full implementation of the mandate.

Minujusth will retain seven of the current 11 constituted Minustah police units deployed in five regional departments to safeguard the progress made in recent years in the area of security through operational support to the national police and the number of formed police units will be reduced by the gradual strengthening of the national police on a two-year period.

In its resolution, the Council decided that Minujusth's action on the rule of law, including, as appropriate, the fight against violence in the community or quick-impact projects, will be part of a strategy of gradual and continuous transfer of activities to development actors.
