Haiti - FLASH : Individuals shoot at Red Cross vehicle

Wednesday, the Haitian Red Cross was the victim of a criminal act perpetrated a few meters from the entrance of the institution. Around 10:30 am, a vehicle bearing the emblem of the Haitian Red Cross (HRC) was attacked by unidentified armed individuals who fired at passengers at point-blank range, severely wounding one of the HRC's executives.

Dr. Guiteau Jean-Pierre, the President of the CRH, said in a note "This act testifies to a lack of knowledge by these individuals of the role of the National Society of the Haitian Red Cross, a neutral and apolitical humanitarian institution whose main mission is to prevent and alleviate human suffering.

The Haitian Red Cross strongly condemns this attack and recalls that humanitarian staff should not be targeted in the exercise of their functions.

Everyone is therefore required to respect the emblem and logo of the Haitian Red Cross so that the National Society can exercise its humanitarian mandate with the most vulnerable in accordance with the Fundamental Principles of the Movement."
