Haiti - Health : Cholera continues to fall

The trend of cholera continues to decline at the national level despite the strong rainfall in May. The effective coordination of the different actors permitted epidermal outbreaks to be identified and controlled very quickly.

The percentage of suspected cases covered by the rapid response was higher than in previous years, given the number of teams currently available for community responses (90% of suspected cases between January and May were covered by a rapid response, of which 86% were in less than 48 hours).

Community activities and institutional care were provided by 9 Non-Governmental organizations (WaSH and Health) with technical and financial support from UNICEF and PAHO.

In partnership with the MSPP, 12 mobile teams and 58 rapid response teams continue to implement cordon sanitaire and community prevention activities (236 temporary chlorination points, 344,000 sensitized people).

The National Plan for the Eradication of Cholera (NPEC) remains underfunded, particularly the alert-response system

and medical care component as regards aspects related to physical improvement of structures. Therefore, response

teams would be phased out by the end of 2017 in the absence of new funding.
