Haiti - FLASH : Demographic explosion threatens the country

During a meeting with the mayors of the West on the management of risks in case of natural disasters, Claude Prépetit, Coordinator of the Seismology Technical Unit, of Bureau of Mines and Energy, recalled that several leading experts in risk management agree that in the Least Developed Countries (LDCs), of which Haiti is a part, one found in natural disasters related to the environment, common factors such as demographic explosion, environmental degradation and aggravating factors, which combine to cause natural disasters linked to human action.

Claude Prépetit, is alarmed and says that demographic growth in Haiti is an urgent problem to be solved, recalling "[...] with a rate of growth of 1.7% per year, the Haitian population will be 16 million by 2030, if nothing is done to stop this population growth and in 2050 the Haitian population could reach 28 million inhabitants..."

He explains that this growth has as a consequence among others: the unbridled expansion of cities, the anarchic multiplication of buildings outside a regulatory framework of urban planning, food insecurity, a critical problem of sanitation and health.

He points out that this demographic growth, which takes place in the absence of economic growth, is a source of poverty and misery, recalling that "[...] the rate of growth from 1976 to 2008 was about 0.76% while the average population growth rate was close to 2% [...]"

Finally, he highlighted the rapid deterioration of the environment (water, air and the risks of an epidemic) caused by the increase in fatras, recalling that every day in Haiti, each citizen on the national territory produces on average 0.6 Kg of waste...
