Haiti - FLASH : Military reinforcement at the Dominican border

Following the hardening and the multiplication of migration controls throughout the Dominican territory, one assisting since the beginning of the week at the Dajabón border crossing (among others), to the repatriation every day from 800 to 1,000 Haitians in irregular migratory situations.

In order to reinforce security at the border, 300 additional military staff were sent to reinforce the Specialized Corps of Border Security (CESFRONT). In addition, new commanders have been appointed for the various battalions that provide security along the border.

In addition, over the past few hours, 15 individuals have been arrested on charges of trafficking of Haitian migrants.

Reacting to the Haitian question, Archbishop Diomedes Espinal, the new President of the Dominican Episcopal Conference and Bishop of the diocese of Mao MonteCristi, while the Dominican population is worried about the massive arrival of Haitians, confirms that the number of Haitians crossing the border is indeed important.

He acknowledges that the Haitians who cross the border "are fleeing the situation in Haiti and are looking for better living conditions and a job." While recognizing the efforts of the Dominican authorities to try to put an end to the passage of clandestine Haitians, he points out "This is a very difficult situation for the Dominican authorities to solve, because we all know that we have a border problem which is not sealed, allowing Haitians to enter illegally in Dominican territory by roundabout ways..."
