Haiti - Environment : Les Cayes youth involved in waste management

At the initiative of the Town Hall of Les Cayes, supported by the Committee for Interministerial and Territorial Development (CIAT), the "Écolo Jeune" group of Les Cayes, runs a summer camp "Zéro Fatras" at Gelée https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-21633-haiti-news-zapping.html until 26 August for the youth of the city, with the financial support of UN Environment as part of a fund made available to it by the Government of Norway.

"This summer camp represents an element of one of the components of the 'Gelée Zéro Fatras' project of the Town Hall of Les Cayes , which is one of a series of pilot experiments that will be implemented by the City Council together with the CIAT in view to feed an integrated solid waste and excretory management plan for the city of Les Cayes and its surroundings, which is already under development," explained Stevens Simplus of CIAT.

This activity, which began on July 24th, aims to train 100 young students from the classes of 3rd to Rheto from different schools of the city of Les Cayes on the issue of solid waste management so that, after the camp, these young people are able to play a raising awareness role among visitors and inhabitants of the immediate environment of the beach and in their respective communities.

In order to raise awareness among young people, the participants addressed a number of topics during the camp, such as the characterization of waste on the beach of Gelée, the flora and fauna of the beach, awareness and waste recycling, environmental risks linked to the beach.

According to Saint Cyr Jean Aubierge, a municipal engineer from the Town Hall of Les Cayes , his institution designed this project with the aim of also educating the merchants and visitors to behave responsibly with a view to setting up a citizen watch association.

In addition to specific interventions related to waste management, the group "Écolo Jeune" animates the camp by socio-cultural activities, sports and also participates in the cleaning of the beach.
