Haiti - FLASH : IRMA returns to category 3

This Sunday morning the major hurricane IRMA was located at 18.0N 47.5W, 1.490 km east of the Caribbean arc and 2.190km south-east of the island of Hispaniola.

IRMA is currently moving west-southwest at a speed of 24 km/h and a slightly slower speed is expected for tonight. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), IRMA is likely to continue to progress on this trajectory for the next 24/36 hours, after which, according to modeling, it should gradually turn westward (probably Monday), then back on a West-Northwest trajectory.

IRMA after degrading to Category 2 again moved to Category 3 on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Maximum sustained winds increased to nearly 185 km/h with gusts above 200 km/h.

An additional reinforcement of IRMA is possible until Monday evening. Hurricane force winds extend up to 35 km from the center and winds of tropical storm force up to 130 km.

According to the current forecast, IRMA is expected to begin to affect the Dominican Republic on Thursday morning and Haiti later in the day.

In Haiti, the Northwest, North, Northeast and Artibonite departments may be the most likely to be affected. However, it will be necessary to wait until Monday to have more precision on the trajectory which is not yet definitive...
