Haiti - FLASH : Project to legalize illegal Haitians in Suriname

The Head of Mission meets with the Director of Foreigners and Migration Affairs of the Ministry of Justice and Police of the Republic of Suriname (JUSPOL) on the Legalization Project, initiated by the Surinamese Government in favor of irregular immigrants in the country to which many of our compatriots belong.

After presenting his thanks to the President and the Government of Surinam for allowing our brothers and sisters in an irregular situation in the country to benefit from this new adjustment of status, Consul Jospitre expressed his gratitude to his colleague for having so promptly responded to this emergency meeting requested by the Consulate.

In a courteous atmosphere, Consul Jospitre expressed some apprehensions arising from the requirements of the regularization process, which could represent obstacles that must be overcome for our compatriots concerned by the project: the inaccessibility of certain required documents, whose obtaining would require that our compatriots go to Haiti; certain inapplicable prerequisites and requirements under Surinamian laws vis-à-vis illegal immigrants; the many challenges faced daily by our compatriots who find themselves in this group and the resulting limitations; the need to strengthen collaboration and communication between the Consulate and the Ministry of Justice and Police...

At the end of the meeting, Mrs Groenveld undertook to make special considerations for our nationals on a case-by-case basis with the support of the Consulate.

The Consul Jospitre concluded by reaffirming his commitment to continue working tirelessly with the Surinamese Government for more sustained and effective assistance to its compatriots in difficulty.
