Haiti - Environment : Bi-national strengthening of environmental cooperation

Tuesday, the Minister of the Environment Pierre Simon Georges and the Minister of the Environment and Natural Resources of the Dominican Republic, Francisco Dominguez Brito met in Port-au-Prince to strengthen binational environmental cooperation of border area.

At the end of the meeting, the two Ministers agreed on a draft joint declaration on the main political axes and common actions in favor of the environment. It was agreed to strengthen existing cooperation in the field of the environment through the active involvement of the two ministries, local authorities and civil society, especially youth organizations.

The two ministries intend, in particular, to strengthen cooperation in the fields of: the fight against climate change, the reduction of natural risks, reforestation, the fight against desertification and pollution, the integrated sustainable management of watersheds and resources in water, and finally environmental governance.

The question of the availability of water, both in quality and quantity, in the shared watersheds of the Artibonite River and Rio Macacia has attracted the attention of the two Ministries who have agreed to initiate immediate concrete initiatives, targeting the two watersheds.
