Friday, as part of the 4th edition of "Fridays of the Environment" Dr. Fritz Nau, Coordinator of the National Ozone Office (BNO) of the Ministry of Environment (MDE), confirmed "Haiti has ratified the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer" stating "The implementation of this International Treaty is the responsibility of the Ministry, which will exercise this responsibility through the BNO."

The mission of the BNO is to ensure that Haiti complies with the provisions of this Protocol aimed at achieving its universal objective of facilitating the regeneration of the ozone layer by 2065 and contributing to the policy of mitigation of greenhouse gases by reducing the temperature rise of the atmosphere by 0.5 degrees Celsius by the end of the century.

In his speech, Dr Nau pointed out that 98% of the substances affecting the ozone layer dependent on Greenhouse Gases (GHG), are found in the cold chain "Knowing the potential consequences of the depletion of the Ozone layer on the functioning of the ecosystem, the BNO has undertaken several initiatives. We can mention among others: the training of refrigeration technicians in cold management, the training of customs agents for the identification and labeling of refrigerants, the strengthening of technical training centers and the awareness of specific sectors and consumers.

In addition, 4 technical centers have been equipped, 144 technicians have been trained of which 60 for the informal sector, 110 customs officers are also trained, 10 refrigerant identifiers have been handed over to the General Administration of Customs (AGD), 50 sets of equipment and appropriate tools were handed over to the first 50 trained technicians. For the next two years (2018-2020), the BNO plans to build, among other things, a network of four refrigerant recycling recovery centers to reduce the pressure on the demand for non-environmentally friendly refrigerants, train more than 200 customs agents, 500 technicians refrigeration technicians, the development of an inter-institutional protocol between the INFP and the AGD"
