Haiti - FLASH : DR strengthens and motorized troops at the border

After reinforcements sent in July https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-21618-haiti-flash-dominican-army-sends-900-more-troops-to-reinforce-border.html then last october https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-22487-haiti-dr-new-military-reinforcement-on-the-dominican-border.html the Dominican army has again announced the sending of additional reinforcement, which will bring to 6,000 the number of soldiers charged with the surveillance of the border between the Dominican Republic and Haiti. Since this summer, 2,000 soldiers have joined the 4,000 already deployed...

On Friday, Army Commander General Braulio Alcántara inspected his troops in several detachments and checkpoints in Elías Piña, Dajabón and Valverde.

Asked by the local press about the concerns of some political sectors about the continued arrival of illegal Haitians in the country, Major General Alcántara said that the authorities were making enormous efforts to deal with this problem and announced that 60 jeeps will be distributed for patrols at the border, also evoking a hundred motorcycles and 2 helicopters.

He also traveled to Matayaya, El Higuero, Banica, Pedro Santana, Los Quemados, Loma de Cabrera, El Guanal and traveled the entire international route between Haiti and the Dominican Republic, where in the mountains are many Haitian nationals stressing "This is an inhospitable and dangerous place, there is no electricity or communication in these mountains [...]"

Let's recall that since 2015 more than 150 surveillance cameras have been installed on the Dominican side at different points of the border, to detect the passage of illegal Haitian migrants, but also to monitor the binational markets and fight against the Dominican military corruption and racket at border posts. In August 2017, the Dominican Minister of Defense, Lieutenant General Rubén Darío Paulino Sem, announced the strengthening and deployment of new surveillance and security technology along the border. Among the devices put in place he had mentioned the increase in the number of surveillance cameras installed at the most strategic control points without providing more details on the other technologies mentioned, among others, the use of long-range UAVs and infra-red detection systems for night surveillance.
