Haiti - COP23 : Statement by the Minister of the Environment

During his speech at the 23rd Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP23) Pierre Simon Georges, the Minister of the Environment, presented the position of Haiti in the fight against climate change , highlighting the adverse impacts of climate change on Small Island Developing States (SIDS). He also used the opportunity to formally express the support of the Government of Haiti for admission as an observer, the Republic of China (Taiwan) to the COP.

Minister Georges has joined the voices of SIDS representatives, to recall the symbolic nature of this COP chaired by the Republic of Fiji. According to the Minister, this 23rd Conference of the Parties on Climate will be, for these many fragile countries, "the COP of the urgency, carrying flowers of hope and ambitious fruits of the International Cooperation for the effective application of the Paris Agreement."

"Climate change is considered as a real time-bomb for the very existence of our territory," said the Minister of Environment of Haiti who launched a strong call to developed countries for a more active solidarity more active towards the fraternal peoples of the Caribbean, including Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Cuba and the Dominican Republic "The urgency to act is now and here !" launched the Minister from the rostrum.

While recalling Haiti's low level of responsibility in this phenomenon, Pierre Simon Georges said that his country was already joining the community of nations in order to avoid irreversible changes in the climate and its unfortunate impact on strategic socio-ecological systems for the socio-economic and political stability of our planet. Stressing to this effect, the vast national clean energy program and a vast campaign of reforestation at the national level through Centers of Forest and Fruit Germplasm, concluding "This collective dynamic in which our President wishes to embark all Haitians, aims accelerate Haiti on the road to a green, emerging economy and a socially inclusive society."
